Chat Room - Your Webcam

This help article includes information on enabling your webcams in the chat room and troubleshooting any problems that you might have.

Turning on your webcam

Once you have entered the chatroom, to activate your web cam mouse select on the webcam icon in the top left hand My Camera box.

Your computer will ask whether you want to 'Allow' or 'Deny' the request to turn your web cam on. Choose Allow to complete with the process.

Your webcam should now be turned on for other chatroom users to view.

Troubleshooting webcams

Unable to see the My Camera box

If you're unable to see the My Camera box, this suggests that your system doesn't have Adobe Flash Player installed. If however you are certain that you do have this installed, you can visit the Adobe Flash Player Test website to run a diagnostics check. If you are still having problems, please try using another web browser such as Google Chrome as a comparison.

Your webcam does not load

If you find when turning on your webcam it does not show you or you have a new web cam that is not working, you will need to configure the settings in the chat room to point it to your web cam.

Windows users

  1. Start watching another person's web cam in the chat room.
  2. On the feed that you are watching, right mouse click on it.
  3. This will open a menu. Mouse click 'Settings'.
  4. Mouse click the web cam icon.
  5. Use the drop down menu in the settings to locate your current web cam device.
  6. Close the settings.
  7. Turn the webcam on again in the chatroom.

Mac OS X users

  1. Start watching another person's web cam in the chat room.
  2. On the feed that you are watching, press your 'control' key and mouse click on it.
  3. This will open a menu. Mouse click 'Settings'.
  4. Mouse click the web cam icon.
  5. Use the drop down menu in the settings to locate your current web cam device (some Mac's webcam devices are shown as USB Video Class USB).
  6. Close the settings.
  7. Turn the webcam on again in the chatroom.

Unable to connect to the video service

If you are unable to connect to the video service, there may be a firewall on your system that is blocking the connection. Please try and diagnose your system by temporarily disabling your firewall, restarting your system, and then trying the webcams again to ascertain whether this is the problem.
